Guardians (2017)

What makes Guardians special is its unabashed, scrappy ambition: it’s a Russian-born superhero swing that doesn’t ask permission from Marvel’s shadow, it just charges straight at the spectacle and hopes you’ll come along for the ride. Set against Cold War aftershocks, it gathers a wonderfully oddball team—bear-man strength, blade-dancing speed, earth-shaping power, aquatic invisibility—and throws them into a neon-lit clash with a techno-nightmare villain, all with a pulpy, comic-book sincerity that can be strangely endearing. The tone is part action-fantasy, part B-movie charm, with enough humor and momentum to keep the gears turning even when the seams show. If you need sleek polish and airtight storytelling, this may not convert you, but if you like underdog franchise-starters with big ideas, earnest energy, and a “we’re really doing this” spirit, Guardians is an easy, curious watch.

Guardians is clearly trying to be Russia’s homegrown superhero team-up, mixing Cold War mythmaking with big, noisy action and a “we’ve assembled the squad” vibe. The problem is it often feels like a rough draft of a better movie: thin character work, clunky dialogue, and a plot that hits familiar beats without adding much personality or surprise. The effects and set pieces have occasional flashes of ambition, and the bear-man concept is honestly fun on paper, but the pacing and execution can make the whole thing feel more like a checklist than a thrill ride. If you’re expecting Marvel-level wit, polish, or emotional payoff, you’ll likely be frustrated; if you’re curious about a different cultural take on superheroes and can tolerate B-movie awkwardness, it might be a one-time novelty.
