Darc (2018)
To bring down a global human trafficking ring, an Interpol agent recruits the help of a brutal criminal with inside knowledge of the yakuza.
What people think about Darc
Darc is the kind of lean, bruising action-thriller that doesn’t pretend to be polite: it comes at you with slickly staged fights, crisp gunplay, and a grime-under-the-fingernails underworld vibe that feels closer to a midnight Yakuza pulp novel than a glossy spy caper. Tony Schiena plays the title antihero with a hard-edged physicality that sells every impact, while the film keeps its momentum by letting the action tell the story as much as the dialogue does. There’s a satisfyingly ruthless cat-and-mouse energy in watching an Interpol agent gamble on a dangerous insider to crack something bigger than either of them can handle. Fair warning, it’s emphatically R-rated—violent, profane, and steeped in ugly subject matter—so it’s not for the squeamish, but if you want “badassery” delivered with competence and bite, this one earns its bruises.
Darc is aiming for a grimy, hard-edged action thriller about taking down human traffickers with the help of a ruthless insider, and it clearly wants that “international crime underworld” intensity. The problem is the story feels paint-by-numbers, leaning on familiar yakuza and rogue-operator clichés, and the plotting can come off contrived enough that the stakes don’t land. If you need strong acting and tight, believable writing to stay invested, this may feel flat and repetitive despite all the brutality. On the plus side, if you’re simply in the mood for R-rated violence, a straightforward revenge/mission vibe, and don’t mind a generic, rough-around-the-edges execution, it can be serviceable background action.
