Soi Cheang keeps the storytelling clean and propulsive, letting the set pieces do their spellwork—wire-fu stunts, creature chaos, and vivid CGI pageantry—while Aaron Kwok brings a restless, mischievous energy to the hero and Gong Li gives the villain an elegant menace that’s hard to look away from. The vibe is family-friendly spectacle with a slightly spooky edge (expect some fresh corpses and skeletons), more crowd-pleasing fun than solemn legend. If you want a straightforward, effects-driven fantasy quest with big action and a classic good-versus-evil pulse, this one delivers; if you’re allergic to glossy CGI and operatic mythmaking, it may not convert you.
