She is spirited, determined and quick on her feet. Disguised as a man by the name of Hua Jun, she is tested every step of the way and must harness her innermost strength and embrace her true potential.
What people think about Mulan
Mulan (2020) is built like a live-action legend: sweeping landscapes, opulent sets, and action staged with a graceful, almost storybook clarity that makes every clash feel larger than life. Niki Caro leans into a more serious, mythic tone than the animated classic, letting Liu Yifei’s calm intensity carry a heroine defined by discipline, resolve, and the courage to be seen. The film’s pleasures are tactile and immediate—thundering cavalry, precise martial choreography, and striking images that linger like paintings—while Donnie Yen and Gong Li add weight and intrigue whenever they enter the frame. If you’re expecting songs and comedy, this isn’t that movie, but if you want a handsome, sincere, big-screen adventure about identity and honor, it’s an easy one to recommend.
Mulan (2020) is clearly aiming for a more serious, live-action legend: big battles, elegant visuals, and a heroine framed as a mythic warrior rather than a quirky underdog. The problem is the screenplay and editing often rush the emotional beats, so character relationships and key turns can feel more like bullet points than earned moments, which drains the story of warmth and momentum. If you’re hoping for the charm, humor, and heart of the 1998 animated film, this version may feel oddly stiff and self-important. Still, if you can treat it as a glossy fantasy-action showcase—especially for its martial-arts staging and striking production design—you might find it perfectly serviceable.
