Crash Pad (2017)

Crash Pad is the kind of raunchy, wrong-place-wrong-time comedy that sneaks up on you with how sharp and oddly sweet it can be, turning a potentially one-note affair farce into a surprisingly nimble character piece. Domhnall Gleeson makes Stensland’s earnest romantic desperation genuinely endearing, and when Thomas Haden Church enters the picture, the movie finds its secret weapon: a prickly, hilarious chemistry and banter that keeps the energy snapping even when the situation gets messy. Director Kevin Tent keeps the tone breezy and mischievous, letting the jokes land while also giving the characters just enough humanity to feel like more than punchlines. Fair warning: it’s proudly crude and drenched in sexual humor, so it won’t be for everyone—but if you like your comedies a little dirty and a lot smarter than they first appear, this one’s an easy yes.

The sexual humor is constant and explicit, and some of the gender politics land casually ugly rather than sharply satirical, so if that stuff grates on you, this won’t win you over. If you’re just here for Domhnall Gleeson’s earnestness and Thomas Haden Church’s grumpy charm, there are a few watchable moments—but don’t expect a clever or daring spin on the premise.
