The Girl with All the Gifts (2016)

The Girl with All the Gifts takes the tired “zombie apocalypse” template and quietly, confidently turns it into something rarer: a smart, eerie, emotionally grounded story about what we owe each other when survival stops being simple. Colm McCarthy builds a tense, fungus-choked atmosphere that feels tactile and unsettling, but the real hook is Sennia Nanua, whose Melanie is equal parts innocence and unnerving mystery—making every scene with her crackle with meaning. Gemma Arterton brings a bruised tenderness that keeps the film human even when the world isn’t, while the action and horror land with a sharp, unsentimental punch. If you want nonstop splatter or easy answers, this may not be your kind of ride, but if you’re open to a genre film with brains, heart, and a lingering chill, it’s absolutely worth your time.

The Girl with All the Gifts is clearly aiming to be a smarter, more human zombie movie—part survival thriller, part moral debate about what “saving humanity” even means—and it mostly succeeds early on with tense atmosphere and a genuinely strong central performance from Sennia Nanua. The problem is that as it explains more of its rules and mythology, the mystery drains away and the pacing starts to sag, especially in the back half where the film feels like it’s trudging toward an ending you can see coming. The action and horror beats are solid but not especially inventive, so if you’re here for relentless scares or fresh zombie mayhem, you may find it a bit restrained and talky. If you like thoughtful genre stories with a melancholy tone and don’t mind a slower, more explanatory finish, it’s worth your time; if you want tight momentum and a knockout finale, temper your expectations.
