Overlord (2018)

Overlord is the rare genre mash-up that doesn’t just mix war and horror—it fuses them, so the dread feels earned and the thrills feel urgent, like you’re trapped in a nightmare that began as a straight-up combat mission. Julius Avery stages the opening and the village infiltration with a soldier’s-eye intensity, then steadily tightens the screws into pulpy, B-movie delirium, propelled by terrific momentum and a grim, confident tone. When the film goes full monster mode, it delivers the goods with crunchy practical effects and satisfyingly nasty set pieces that never forget the human stakes at the center. It’s not for the squeamish (or anyone sensitive to sexual-threat material), but if you want a lean, mean ride that plays like a WWII thriller possessed by a midnight horror flick, it’s an absolute blast.

Overlord wants to be a pulpy, grindhouse mash-up of WWII mission movie and gooey mad-scientist horror, and to its credit it starts with real intensity and a strong sense of boots-on-the-ground chaos. The problem is that once the “secret experiment” card is on the table, the film often plays it surprisingly safe—pacing gets choppy, the scares feel familiar, and the script doesn’t dig much deeper than the premise. If you’re hoping for wildly inventive monster mayhem or a story that really commits to its outrageous idea, you may find it a bit mild and predictable despite the gore. But if you just want a brisk, violent B-movie ride with solid action, a likable lead, and some nasty practical effects, it can still scratch that itch.
