Martin Eden (2019)
The tale of an individualist proletarian in a time marked by the rise of mass political movements. In early 20th-century Italy, illiterate sailor Martin Eden seeks fame as a writer while torn between the love of a bourgeois girl and allegiance to his social class.
What people think about Martin Eden
Martin Eden is special because it turns a familiar rise-and-fall premise into something bracingly alive: a romantic drama that’s also a feverish portrait of ambition colliding with class, politics, and self-invention. Pietro Marcello directs with a restless, lyrical visual style that makes the film feel like memory and history braided together, while never losing the intimate pull of Martin’s longing for Elena and for a life he can write himself into. Luca Marinelli is magnetic—equal parts tenderness, swagger, and raw hunger—so even when Martin’s choices frustrate you, you can’t stop watching him chase the idea of becoming “someone.” It’s more artful and philosophically charged than conventionally crowd-pleasing, but if you like romances with sharp social teeth and cinema that swings for the fences, this one lands with real force.
Martin Eden is clearly aiming for a sweeping, literary character study about ambition, class, and the seduction of “becoming someone,” and it often looks and sounds gorgeous while doing it. The problem is it can feel more like a curated gallery of striking scenes than a story that builds cleanly, so if you need a tight plot and clear momentum, you may find it frustratingly diffuse. Its romance and social ideas also have an intentionally old-world, talky quality that can read as timeless to some and simply tiresome to others. Stick with it if you’re patient with artsy structure and want Luca Marinelli going all-in on a conflicted, self-made antihero; skip it if you’re after a crisp narrative or modern-feeling emotional payoff.
