The Prodigy (2019)

The Prodigy takes the well-worn “something’s wrong with the child” premise and sharpens it into a sleek, nasty little thriller that knows exactly how to get under your skin. Nicholas McCarthy builds dread with a cold, clinical atmosphere—quiet hallways, watchful silences, and the creeping sense that love and fear are starting to look the same—while Taylor Schilling grounds the terror in a mother’s raw, believable desperation. Jackson Robert Scott is the film’s secret weapon, delivering a performance that’s unsettling not because it’s loud, but because it feels eerily precise. It’s not reinventing the genre, and the violence can be brutal, but if you want a horror ride that’s tense, mean, and anchored by strong acting, it’s a grimly satisfying watch.

The Prodigy is clearly trying to be a slick, modern “evil child” thriller with a grieving-mother hook and a supernatural twist, and it does have a committed lead performance from Taylor Schilling plus a few nasty, well-staged shocks. The problem is it leans hard on familiar genre beats, so you can often see the next turn coming long before the characters do, which drains the tension instead of building it. Dialogue and character choices can feel like they exist to push the plot along rather than behave like real people, making the scares land more as noise than dread. If you’re tired of possession/reincarnation-style horror that plays it safe, this will likely feel forgettable—but if you just want a brisk, violent, late-night thriller with a creepy kid and some grim imagery, it’ll do the job.
