The House (2017)

The House takes a wonderfully ridiculous premise—a pair of ordinary parents staring down impossible tuition—and turns it into a gleefully escalating suburban crime spree that feels like a backyard Vegas fever dream. Amy Poehler and Will Ferrell play it straight enough to make the madness funnier, letting the comedy grow from recognizable panic into full-throttle, anything-goes mayhem, while Jason Mantzoukas storms in with the kind of wired, unpredictable energy that keeps scenes popping. The vibe is raunchy, fast, and surprisingly sharp about how quickly “just this once” can curdle into something bigger, meaner, and funnier than you expect. If you’re allergic to R-rated language, crude jokes, and comic violence, it’ll be too much—but if you want a lively, high-spirited comedy with a criminal edge and a few genuine surprises, it’s an easy bet.

The House is trying to mash up suburban-parent panic with a crime-comedy escalation, basically “nice people open a casino and everything spirals,” and on paper that’s a solid setup for Ferrell, Poehler, and Mantzoukas. The problem is it rarely builds real comedic momentum, so scenes feel like they’re straining for laughs rather than earning them, and the characters’ moral slide can come off more loud than clever. It also leans hard into R-rated raunch and sudden bursts of violence, which might feel messy instead of edgy if you’re expecting a sharper, smarter satire.
