Shaft (2019)

Shaft (2019) is a swaggering, crowd-pleasing mashup of action and comedy that knows exactly what it is: a loud, funny, old-school star vehicle that lets Samuel L. Jackson strut, scowl, and wisecrack like he was born holding a badge and a one-liner. The real hook is the generational clash—JJ’s polished, tech-savvy caution rubbing against Shaft’s Harlem-hardened instincts—until the movie becomes a surprisingly warm, combustible family team-up with terrific chemistry and a welcome dose of nostalgia when Richard Roundtree steps in. Tim Story keeps the pace brisk, the soundtrack slick, and the vibe unapologetically pulpy, with enough mystery to keep the investigation moving between punchlines and shootouts. It’s not for anyone allergic to crude jokes, heavy profanity, and violent comeuppance, but if you want a fun, throwback ride that doesn’t pretend to be polite, this one hits the groove.

Shaft (2019) is trying to mash up a father-son reconciliation with a throwback, swaggering Harlem crime caper, and it does have a few sparks when Samuel L. Jackson is allowed to just be Samuel L. Jackson. The problem is the movie leans hard on “retro” shock-jock humor that often feels tone-deaf and juvenile, so if you’re sensitive to misogynistic or homophobic jokes, this will likely wear you down fast. The mystery plot exists mostly to shuttle you between quips, shootouts, and attitude, and it’s not sharp enough to make the investigation feel genuinely gripping. If you want a light, profane action-comedy with occasional charm and don’t mind rough edges, you might coast along; if you’re hoping for clever satire or a modern update with real bite, this isn’t it.
