Down by Love (2016)

Down by Love has the rare, unnerving pull of a true story that feels too intimate to be safely “about” anyone else—an illicit romance told with the quiet tension of locked doors and the ache of wanting what you shouldn’t. Pierre Godeau keeps the tone grounded and adult, letting the drama simmer in glances, routine, and the slow erosion of certainty, while Adèle Exarchopoulos radiates a natural, lived-in charisma that makes every moment with her feel immediate and dangerous. Guillaume Gallienne is just as compelling, playing a man of authority who gradually unravels, not with melodrama but with the believable panic of someone realizing he’s crossed a line he can’t redraw. It’s not a comfort watch—there’s frank sexuality and harsh language, and the moral knots aren’t smoothed over—but if you’re drawn to romances that risk everything and leave you thinking afterward, this one gets under your skin.

Down by Love is aiming for a forbidden, true-story romance set inside a women’s prison, with the promise of moral conflict and high stakes. The problem is it keeps crucial character context at arm’s length—especially Anna’s—so motivations can feel vague and the relationship comes off more like a headline than something lived-in. If you need convincing chemistry and emotional depth to buy a romance, this may feel oddly sanitized and dramatically thin despite the provocative setup. That said, the performances are committed and the film has a restrained, serious tone, so it may work for viewers who prefer understated drama and can tolerate unanswered questions (plus moderate nudity and very strong language).
