Chocolat (2016)

Chocolat is special because it turns a forgotten name into a vivid, full-bodied life, balancing the fizz of Belle Époque showmanship with the ache of what it cost to be celebrated and demeaned at the same time. Omar Sy brings enormous charisma and tenderness to Rafael Padilla, while James Thierrée matches him beat for beat, so their partnership feels like a dance that can be joyous one moment and quietly devastating the next. Roschdy Zem shoots the circus world with real energy—spotlights, applause, and physical comedy—then lets the air go cold when the film looks at the racism baked into the entertainment itself. It’s not a light watch despite the clowning, but if you want a moving, accessible drama that entertains even as it confronts history, this one stays with you.

Chocolat wants to be an accessible, crowd-pleasing biopic about a groundbreaking performer navigating fame, friendship, and brutal racism in Belle Époque France, and it largely succeeds at making his story easy to follow. The problem is it’s so committed to the familiar rise-and-fall blueprint that you can often predict the next “triumph” or “downfall” beat before it arrives, which blunts the emotional impact. The screenplay tends to smooth over complexity into standard biopic scenes, so if you’re hoping for a sharper, more daring take on art, exploitation, and identity, this may feel a bit safe. Still, Omar Sy brings warmth and dignity, and the period circus world is engaging—just don’t go in expecting the film itself to be as bold as its subject.
