Nine Lives (2016)

Nine Lives is a breezy, high-concept family comedy that takes a familiar body-swap idea and gives it a surprisingly warm, whisker-twitching twist: watching a hard-charging tycoon forced to experience his own life from the floor level of the people he’s neglected. Director Barry Sonnenfeld keeps the tone bright and cartoony, mixing slapstick cat chaos with a gentle undercurrent about second chances, while Kevin Spacey leans into the physical comedy and Jennifer Garner grounds the household with real, lived-in frustration and affection. It’s the kind of movie that knows exactly what it is—silly, sentimental, and designed to play well with kids—yet it earns its heart by letting the laughs serve a simple message about showing up for your family. If you’re allergic to broad humor or “talking animal” logic, it may feel lightweight, but if you want an easy, feel-good watch with a few sincere moments tucked between the fur gags, this one lands.

Nine Lives is clearly aiming for a broad, kid-friendly “dad learns empathy” fantasy comedy, with Barry Sonnenfeld trying to wring heart out of a goofy body-swap-as-a-cat premise. The problem is it plays like a checklist of familiar beats—corporate villain, strained marriage, lesson learned on a deadline—without enough genuinely funny set pieces or clever writing to make the ride feel fresh. Kevin Spacey and Jennifer Garner do what they can, and younger viewers may enjoy the simple slapstick and the cat antics, but adults looking for sharp comedy or real emotional punch will likely find it flat and oddly mechanical. If you’re after an easy, harmless family background movie, it’ll do; if you want wit, originality, or a warm classic in the genre, this probably isn’t your best use of 90 minutes.
