Three (2016)

Three is Johnnie To in pure control mode: a crime thriller that turns a sterile hospital into a pressure cooker where every hallway, elevator, and whispered decision feels loaded. The premise is deliciously perverse—a wounded gangster weaponizes “human rights” to stall for a rescue—while the cop who sees the trap chooses to let it breathe, creating a slow-burn chess match between duty, ego, and survival. Vicky Zhao, Louis Koo, and Wallace Chung bring sharp, lived-in tension to the standoff, and To stages it all with the kind of spatial clarity that makes you lean forward, tracking who’s cornered and who’s bluffing. If you want constant speed, the deliberate build may test you, but stick with it and you’ll be rewarded with an audacious, meticulously choreographed climax that earns its reputation.

Three is clearly trying to be a slick, pressure-cooker thriller where a hospital becomes a chessboard and everyone’s playing for time, and Johnnie To knows how to stage tense standoffs. The problem is the central “human rights” stalling tactic can feel like a thin excuse to stretch the setup, and the movie spends so long winding the spring that the payoff may not feel proportionate. When it finally cuts loose, the tone shifts hard and the CGI blood can look distractingly artificial, which may pull you out right when it should be gripping you most. If you enjoy talky cat-and-mouse games and controlled tension, there’s still fun to be had—just don’t expect the finale to land with the same elegance as the build.
