Ouija: Origin of Evil (2016)
In 1967 Los Angeles, a widowed mother and her two daughters add a new stunt to bolster their séance scam business and unwittingly invite authentic evil into their home. When the youngest daughter is overtaken by the merciless spirit, this small family confronts unthinkable fears to save her and send her possessor back to the other side.
What people think about Ouija: Origin of Evil
Ouija: Origin of Evil is the rare prequel that doesn’t just justify its existence—it elevates the whole idea with craft, heart, and genuinely unnerving atmosphere. Mike Flanagan turns a simple parlor-game premise into a slow-burn 1960s haunted-house experience, where the period details, creeping dread, and well-timed shocks work in harmony instead of competing for attention. What really sells it, though, is the family at the center: Elizabeth Reaser and the young cast make you care before the darkness closes in, so the scares land with emotional weight rather than empty noise. If you prefer horror that’s more moody and escalating than nonstop gore, this is a smart, satisfyingly scary ride—but if possession stories aren’t your thing, it won’t change your mind.
Ouija: Origin of Evil is clearly trying to be a classy, old-school possession story with a 1960s vibe, and for a while it actually pulls that off with strong atmosphere, solid pacing, and a genuinely creepy child performance. The problem is it can’t resist sliding into familiar horror beats, and the writing starts to feel like it’s servicing franchise obligations rather than following the most interesting version of its own story. The finale is where some viewers tap out: it aims big, but the execution and effects can feel uneven and the wrap-up doesn’t land with the same confidence as the build. If you want a polished, jump-scare-heavy PG-13 possession ride, you’ll likely have a good time; if you’re picky about endings and originality, you may leave annoyed rather than scared.
