An Inspector Calls (2015)

An Inspector Calls is the rare chamber thriller that feels like a moral reckoning and a nail-biting mystery at the same time, tightening its grip with every question asked across a well-appointed dining table. Aisling Walsh gives Priestley’s classic the pulse of cinema—moody, precise, and quietly suffocating—while the writing turns polite conversation into a series of trapdoors. David Thewlis is mesmerizing as Inspector Goole, not so much investigating as calmly dismantling the comfortable stories people tell about themselves, and the rest of the cast meets him with performances that crack in fascinating, human ways. It’s talky by design and unapologetically pointed about class and responsibility, so if you want action it may not be your meal—but if you like tense, intelligent drama that lingers in the mind, it’s a terrific watch.

An Inspector Calls (2015) is clearly aiming to be a tight, moral-pressure-cooker mystery: one room, one night, and a family’s respectability peeled back by a relentless interrogator. If you’re expecting a twisty crime thriller with lots of action, you may find it too stagey and talk-heavy, with the “mystery” functioning more as a vehicle for social critique than a puzzle to solve. The tone can feel didactic, like you’re being lectured as much as entertained, and the confined setting means the tension lives or dies on dialogue and performance rather than plot momentum. That said, David Thewlis gives the film a sharp, unsettling presence, so if you like chamber dramas that confront class and responsibility head-on, it’ll land much better.
