The Paradise Suite (2015)

What makes The Paradise Suite special is the way it turns Amsterdam into a crossroads of souls, where six strangers’ lives brush against each other and suddenly nothing feels incidental. Joost van Ginkel tells this as a lyrical, mosaic-like drama—poetic in its rhythms, modern in its anxieties—finding flashes of grace amid refugee trauma, moral compromise, and the quiet violence of exploitation. The performances (especially Anjela Nedyalkova’s fragile resolve and Boris Isaković’s haunted weight) give the film its pulse, making big social realities feel painfully intimate without tipping into sermonizing. It’s an intense watch with explicit nudity and harrowing situations, so it won’t be for everyone, but if you’re open to a moving, admirably humane film that lingers like a song you can’t shake, it’s worth the trip.

The Paradise Suite is clearly trying to be a compassionate, multi-strand portrait of immigrants and outsiders in Amsterdam, linking their lives through small moments that ripple into big consequences. The problem is it bites off so many heavy topics—exploitation, trauma, guilt, vengeance, faith, family—that the film can feel fragmented, like several intense short films forced to share one suitcase. If you need a clean, cohesive narrative arc, or you’re not up for severe sexual content and very distressing scenes, this will likely feel punishing rather than profound. That said, the performances have grit and sincerity, and when the movie slows down to focus on a single character, it briefly becomes the human drama it wants to be.
