Alpha (2018)
In the prehistoric past, Keda, a young and inexperienced hunter, struggles to return home after being separated from his tribe when bison hunting goes awry. On his way back he will find an unexpected ally.
What people think about Alpha
Alpha is special because it turns a prehistoric survival tale into something quietly intimate: a story told with images, weather, and raw human determination more than chatter. Albert Hughes shoots the ancient world with a painter’s eye—icy blues, firelit caves, vast plains—so you feel the cold in your bones and the wonder in your chest, while Kodi Smit-McPhee brings a gentle, believable vulnerability to a young hunter forced to grow up fast. The vibe is lean, old-fashioned adventure with modern visual muscle, mixing tense peril with moments of surprising tenderness as an unlikely partnership takes shape in the wilderness. It isn’t for viewers who want rapid-fire plot twists or a lot of dialogue, but if you’re on the fence and crave a handsome, heartfelt journey that earns its emotion, this one rewards you.
Alpha is clearly aiming for a primal, almost wordless survival fable about the earliest bond between human and wolf, and on that level it delivers striking landscapes, solid physical acting, and a sincere emotional through-line. The catch is the story is very simple and sometimes feels like it’s moving from hardship to hardship on autopilot, so if you need sharp dialogue or surprising turns, you may find the pacing a bit stolid. There’s also a fair amount of subtitled tribal language, which adds authenticity but can make it feel more like a visual experience than a chatty adventure. If you’re sensitive to animal peril or hunting violence, it’s PG-13 but still contains several tense, rough sequences; if you’re here for atmosphere, endurance, and a gentle heart under the grit, it’s a decent watch.
