Kung Fu Yoga (2017)
Two professors team up to locate a lost treasure and embark on an adventure that takes them from a Tibetan ice cave to Dubai, and to a mountain temple in India.
What people think about Kung Fu Yoga
Kung Fu Yoga is special because it remembers what blockbuster adventure used to feel like: a globe-trotting Saturday-matinee romp powered by Jackie Chan’s easy charm, physical comedy, and action that’s more playful than punishing. It bounces from icy Tibetan caves to the gleam of Dubai and onward to temple-strewn India with a bright, postcard sense of wonder, treating the world as a playground for gags, chases, and good-natured spectacle. The tone is proudly silly and family-friendly, the kind of movie that wants you grinning more than gripping the armrest, and it largely delivers on that promise with colorful energy and old-school crowd-pleasing momentum. If you’re looking for grounded realism or a tight mystery, it may feel featherlight, but if you want an exotic, explosive change of pace that knows how to have fun, this is an easy yes.
Kung Fu Yoga is clearly aiming for a breezy, family-friendly globe-trotting adventure where Jackie Chan mixes light comedy with action and a treasure-hunt mystery. The problem is the film feels strangely cobbled together: the plot lurches from set piece to set piece, the dialogue lands with a thud, and the CGI often looks too fake to sell the danger or the wonder. Some jokes and cultural beats come off dated and occasionally stereotyped, which can make the whole thing feel out of touch rather than charming. If you’re only here for Chan’s physical comedy and a few energetic stunt moments in flashy locations, you might get a mild kick out of it—but if you want a coherent adventure or modern action filmmaking, this is an easy skip.
