Strange Magic (2015)

Strange Magic is the kind of animated oddball that wins you over on sheer personality: a candy-colored fairy-tale world colliding with a gloopy, moonlit swamp, all propelled by a jukebox musical energy that feels closer to a pop fantasia than a standard kids’ cartoon. It’s brisk, funny, and gleefully stuffed with imaginative creatures, and Alan Cumming’s Bog King gives the film a surprisingly soulful center amid the sparkle and snark. The vibe is playful and slightly mischievous—more “romance gets turned upside down” than syrupy storybook—so it keeps moving even when it gets a little chaotic. If you’re allergic to pop-song mashups or prefer your fantasy strictly traditional, it may not be your potion, but if you want a lively, family-friendly musical with real visual flair and a cheeky streak, it’s an easy bet.

Strange Magic is clearly aiming to be a jukebox-fairy-tale mashup about love, cynicism, and second chances, with colorful world-building and a surprisingly game voice cast (Alan Cumming especially). The problem is it plays like a highlight reel of half-finished ideas: the plot lurches from beat to beat, the tone swings from sweet to chaotic, and the characters don’t get enough depth to make the romance or the “true love” message land. The nonstop pop-song barrage is either the whole point or the whole problem—if you don’t enjoy constant musical interruptions, it’ll feel like the movie is trying to distract you from its thin storytelling. If you’re looking for a tight, emotionally satisfying family fantasy, this may test your patience; if you just want bright animation, broad comedy, and familiar tunes with low stakes, you might get by.
