Anthropoid (2016)

Anthropoid earns its power the old-fashioned way: by making history feel immediate, personal, and terrifyingly uncertain, as if every whispered conversation could be the one that gets you killed. Sean Ellis directs with a patient, slow-burn precision, letting tension tighten scene by scene until the air itself seems thin, while Cillian Murphy and Jamie Dornan give performances that are all nerves and resolve—heroism stripped of speeches and replaced with hard choices. The film’s Prague isn’t a postcard; it’s a city under a boot, rendered with an earnest, lived-in grit that makes the stakes land without melodrama. Be warned, it’s intense and often brutal, but if you can handle war-time violence, the final stretch hits with the kind of gripping, mournful force that stays with you long after the credits.

Anthropoid is clearly aiming for a grounded, historically respectful thriller about an extraordinary real-life assassination, and it does get the grim stakes and paranoia of occupied Prague across. The problem is that the filmmaking often feels stiff and oddly flat, so stretches of setup and resistance politics can play more dutiful than gripping, with pacing that doesn’t always earn the tension it’s reaching for. If you want a propulsive war thriller with big emotional payoffs, this may leave you cold, and the violence is blunt and sometimes hard to watch. Still, Cillian Murphy and Jamie Dornan bring commitment, and the final act has a claustrophobic intensity that may satisfy viewers who prefer sober realism over Hollywood-style thrills.
