The Gift (2015)

The Gift is the kind of psychological thriller that sneaks up on you: elegant on the surface, quietly vicious underneath, and powered by the unnerving idea that the past doesn’t stay buried just because you’ve moved into a nicer house. Joel Edgerton directs with a cool, confident hand, letting small social discomforts curdle into dread, while Rebecca Hall and Jason Bateman make the marriage at its center feel lived-in enough that every new intrusion lands like a personal violation. The film’s suspense comes less from jump scares than from razor-wire tension, moral uncertainty, and performances that keep shifting your sympathies without ever tipping their hand. It’s not for everyone—there’s some disturbing material and an implied sexual assault—but if you like thrillers that leave you arguing with yourself long after the credits, this one delivers.

The Gift is aiming for a slow-burn psychological thriller about guilt, power, and how the past can rot a seemingly perfect life from the inside out. It’s at its best when it lets the tension simmer and when the performances (especially Rebecca Hall’s grounded unease and Edgerton’s creepy politeness) do the heavy lifting. But if you’re hoping for a twisty, fast-moving mystery, the middle can feel like it’s hitting familiar home-invasion/obsession beats and taking the scenic route to get where you already suspect it’s going. Also, be aware it leans into unsettling intimidation and includes implied sexual assault, so if that’s a hard no, this one isn’t worth your time.
