The vibe is noir-adjacent and small-town strange, with a single diner and a handful of suspects becoming an arena for paranoia, temptation, and sudden violence. It is undeniably R-rated—sexuality, brutal bursts of gore, and harsh language included—so it’s not for everyone, but if you like your crime thrillers atmospheric, well-acted, and quietly confident, this one is a satisfying watch.

The Virtuoso is clearly aiming for a sleek, moody hitman puzzle where tension comes from minimal clues, small-town suspicion, and a mentor figure dispensing ominous wisdom. The problem is it often mistakes slow pacing and heavy narration for suspense, so the story can feel like it’s circling the block rather than tightening the noose, and the beats land as familiar long before they’re meant to. Anthony Hopkins brings a bit of gravitas, and there are moments of atmosphere and competence, but the script and character work don’t give the premise enough freshness to justify the buildup.
