Urge (2016)
A group of friends on holiday on an island experiment with a new designer drug that makes them lose their ability to control their urges.
What people think about Urge
Urge is the kind of slick, sunlit thriller that turns a luxury vacation into a moral freefall, using its island-gloss setting to make every bad idea feel dangerously seductive. The hook isn’t just the designer drug—it’s the way the film watches civility peel away, scene by scene, until impulse becomes identity, and you can’t look away from the wreckage. Pierce Brosnan is the wicked cherry on top, gleefully leaning into a charismatic, devil-at-the-bar presence that gives the whole ride a knowing, slightly camp edge without deflating the menace. It’s messy in places and definitely not for the squeamish (or anyone sensitive to graphic violence, sexual content, and heavy language), but if you want a nasty little cautionary tale about indulgence with a strong central performance and a pulpy midnight-movie vibe, this one earns your curiosity.
Urge is clearly aiming for a slick, taboo-thriller about what happens when inhibition disappears, with a sun-drenched island setting and a “what would you do?” hook. The problem is it plays more like a string of nasty impulses than a coherent mystery, with thin writing, erratic pacing, and characters who are hard to care about long before things turn brutal. Pierce Brosnan brings a bit of slick menace, and there are a couple of darkly comic, “did that really just happen?” moments, but they’re not enough to make the chaos feel purposeful. If you need tight plotting, believable behavior, or anyone remotely likable to anchor the ride, this will probably feel empty; if you’re only here for outrageous, R-rated escalation, you may get what you came for.
