The Darkest Minds (2018)

The Darkest Minds takes a familiar dystopian setup and gives it a bruised, human heartbeat: it’s less about flashy powers than the fear of being labeled, caged, and erased, and the quiet courage it takes to trust anyway. Jennifer Yuh Nelson keeps the pace moving with a road-movie urgency, while Amandla Stenberg grounds the whole film with a performance that’s tender, wary, and quietly fierce, making the allegory feel personal instead of preachy. The vibe is tense but hopeful, with found-family warmth cutting through the surveillance-state dread, and the cast sells the bonds in a way that makes you root for them even when the world turns cruel. It won’t convert you if you’re allergic to YA romance or genre conventions, but if you want a smart, emotionally driven adventure with real themes under the thrills, this one is easy to recommend.

The Darkest Minds is clearly aiming for a slick, emotional YA dystopian ride about persecuted teens with powers, friendship-on-the-run bonding, and a dash of romance. The problem is it often feels like a checklist of familiar genre beats, spending so much time setting up rules, factions, and future conflicts that the movie can start to feel heavy and oddly low-energy for something billed as action-adventure. If you’re tired of “chosen teen escapes oppressive system” stories or you want a standalone film with a punchy, satisfying payoff, this may leave you feeling like you just watched the prologue. That said, Amandla Stenberg brings real sincerity, and there are a few warm, human moments between the kids that work better than the larger plot machinery.
