Green Room (2016)
A punk rock band is forced to fight for survival after witnessing an act of violence at a skinhead bar.
What people think about Green Room
Green Room is the rare thriller that feels like it’s happening in real time—tight, breathless, and so sharply directed you can almost hear the locks clicking into place around the characters. Jeremy Saulnier turns a grimy punk-gig setting into a pressure cooker, balancing grim humor with nerve-jangling suspense while the editing keeps you trapped in the moment right alongside the band. Anton Yelchin and Imogen Poots make the panic and grit feel earned, and Patrick Stewart is chilling precisely because he never needs to raise his voice. Be warned: it’s brutally graphic and unflinching, but if you want a lean, expertly crafted survival nightmare that doesn’t waste a second, this one hits like a power chord.
Green Room is trying to be a stripped-down, real-time survival thriller where a bad gig turns into a claustrophobic siege, and it largely succeeds on sheer tension and gritty realism. The problem is it’s so committed to blunt, procedural brutality that if you need a strong emotional anchor or richer character work, it can feel cold—more like watching people endure damage than getting to know them. It’s also not especially interested in novelty or big thematic statements; it’s efficient, nasty, and single-minded, which some viewers read as forgettable once the adrenaline wears off. If you’re squeamish, hate sustained panic, or don’t want neo-Nazi imagery anywhere near your entertainment, this will feel like an endurance test—but if you want a tightly made pressure-cooker thriller with terrific performances (especially Anton Yelchin and a chilling Patrick Stewart), it delivers exactly that.
