The Shallows (2016)
While surfing on a secluded beach, Nancy finds herself in the feeding grounds of a great white shark. Though stranded only 200 yards from shore, survival proves to be the ultimate test of wills, requiring all of her ingenuity, resourcefulness, and fortitude.
What people think about The Shallows
The Shallows is a razor-lean survival thriller that turns a simple setup into a nerve-jangling experience, proving you don’t need a sprawling body count to feel truly trapped. Jaume Collet-Serra stages the ocean like a beautiful, indifferent arena—sunlit, serene, and suddenly terrifying—while the tension tightens with the steady logic of a vise. Blake Lively carries the film almost singlehandedly, making Nancy’s fear, grit, and improvisational intelligence feel physical and immediate, so every small decision lands like a life-or-death gamble. If you’re looking for a deep mythology or you’re especially sensitive to shark peril, it may not be your idea of fun, but if you want a smart, atmospheric, relentlessly escalating ride, this one bites hard.
The Shallows is trying to be a lean, single-location survival thriller where one woman’s grit and quick thinking are the whole show, and on that basic level it mostly delivers. The problem is it can feel a bit too engineered—like the movie keeps arranging “one more obstacle” rather than letting tension build naturally—so if you want smart, escalating suspense, you may find it oddly flat. The added grief-and-growth backstory aims for emotional weight, but it’s fairly broad and can come off like padding around a very simple premise. Still, Blake Lively sells the physical exhaustion and panic better than the script deserves, and if you’re in the mood for a brisk, PG-13 shark survival ride (and you’re not squeamish about open water), it’s a decent way to kill 90 minutes.
