He's Out There (2018)
On vacation at a remote lake house, a mother and her two young daughters must fight for survival after falling into a terrifying and bizarre nightmare conceived by a psychopath.
What people think about He's Out There
He’s Out There takes a familiar home-invasion setup and turns it into something nastier and more unnerving: a nightmare that feels handcrafted, like a child’s game poisoned into a ritual. Director Dennis Iliadis keeps the tension tight and physical, letting the remote lake-house calm curdle into dread while Yvonne Strahovski grounds the film with a ferocious, believable maternal fight-for-survival energy. The vibe is relentless and mean in that effective, white-knuckle way—more creeping fairy-tale menace than slick jump-scare rollercoaster—so it sticks with you even when the screen goes dark. If you prefer your horror gentle or cathartic, this one may feel punishing, but if you want a lean thriller that commits to its fear and never lets you breathe, it’s a bracing watch.
He’s Out There is clearly aiming for a lean, mean home-invasion nightmare: a mother protecting her kids in an isolated setting while a masked predator toys with them like it’s a twisted fairy tale. The problem is it leans so hard on familiar genre beats and “why would you do that?” decisions that the tension can feel manufactured rather than earned, especially if you’ve seen a few of these before. It’s also relentlessly grim and stressful, with threats to children and sustained dread that doesn’t give you much breathing room, so it’s a rough sit if you want horror that’s fun or clever. On the plus side, Yvonne Strahovski commits and sells the desperation, and a few eerie set pieces (the strings, dolls, and storybook vibe) land—just don’t expect a fresh or deeply satisfying payoff.
