Toni Erdmann is that rare comedy-drama that makes you laugh, wince, and then realize—almost against your will—that it’s quietly rearranging your heart. Maren Ade stages a father’s absurd, sometimes mortifying interventions into his high-achieving daughter’s polished corporate life with such precise observation that the humor feels both outrageous and painfully true, anchored by Sandra Hüller’s tightly wound intensity and Peter Simonischek’s inspired, unruly warmth. The vibe is equal parts cringe-comedy and soulful human portrait, the kind that lets long scenes breathe until they bloom into something unexpectedly moving. It’s long and occasionally daring in its discomfort (including explicit sexual talk and notable nudity), so it won’t be for everyone—but if you’ve ever suspected success can look a lot like loneliness, this film meets you there and coaxes out a real, hard-earned laugh.

Toni Erdmann is aiming for something admirable: a painfully honest father-daughter story that uses absurd, cringe-comedy to jab at corporate emptiness and emotional shutdown. The problem is it’s extremely long and intentionally awkward, with lots of pause-heavy scenes where the “joke” is really your discomfort—if you need tight pacing or clear punchlines, this will feel like endurance cinema. There are big swings into explicit, boundary-pushing situations (including notable sexual content and extended nudity), which can come off less “brave” and more “please end” depending on your tolerance. If you’re patient with slow-burn character work, you’ll find sharp observations and two committed lead performances; if you’re not, it may feel like a three-hour practical joke played on you.
