Adulterers (2016)
On a steamy New Orleans afternoon, Sam Deuprey decides to surprise his beautiful wife, Ashley, for their anniversary and comes home early. But Ashley is not alone in the bedroom. She and her lover, Damien are about to learn how far a jealous husband will go.
What people think about Adulterers
Adulterers grabs you by the collar with a sweaty New Orleans immediacy and then tightens the screws into something far more psychologically twisted than a typical “caught cheating” thriller. H.M. Coakley stages the fallout like a pressure cooker, letting Sean Faris’ simmering, wounded intensity play off Danielle Savre and Mehcad Brooks in a chamber-piece that’s tense, intimate, and uncomfortably engaging. The vibe is sultry and claustrophobic, more about the mind’s spirals and the stories we tell ourselves in moments of betrayal than about action set pieces, and it keeps you leaning forward to see how far it will go. It’s not for everyone—there’s sexual content and the subject matter is dark—but if you like thrillers that feel like a moral fever dream, this one is a sharp, mind-bending watch.
Adulterers is aiming for a sweaty, moral-panic thriller about betrayal, revenge, and the fantasies people spin when their life detonates in an instant. The problem is it often plays less like a tense character study and more like a disjointed, oddly narrated exercise where the editing and structure keep yanking you out of the moment, and most of the characters are hard to care about for reasons beyond “they’re doing bad things.” It leans into nudity and shock-value turns, so if you’re hoping for a smart, grounded New Orleans noir or a psychological thriller with believable behavior, this will likely feel bizarre and unsatisfying. If you can tolerate rough filmmaking for a pulpy, mean-spirited premise and a few committed performances, you might get a quick, trashy kick out of it, but don’t expect polish or depth.
