Exposed (2016)

Exposed is the kind of gritty New York thriller that dares to stitch a hard-boiled cop mystery to an eerie, street-level tale of faith and fractured perception, and the uneasy blend is exactly what makes it linger. Keanu Reeves plays his detective with a worn-in decency, while Ana de Armas brings a raw, searching intensity that turns the film’s “is this real?” atmosphere into something emotional, not just puzzling. Director Gee Malik Linton keeps the mood shadowy and unsettled, letting small details and uneasy encounters do the heavy lifting as two seemingly separate worlds start to rhyme. It’s not for everyone—its subject matter is dark and the pacing can feel more like a fever dream than a tidy procedural—but if you like crime stories with a haunted edge and a willingness to go to uncomfortable places, it’s a compelling watch.

Exposed is clearly aiming for a gritty, spiritual-tinged noir where a cop’s death investigation collides with a young woman’s “miracle” and psychological unraveling, and on paper that’s a solid hook. In practice, it often feels like two different movies awkwardly stitched together, with murky plotting, sluggish pacing, and twists that can come off more confusing than satisfying. The R-rated material is also heavy and unpleasant (sexual violence, abuse implications, and bleak imagery), so if you’re looking for an entertaining thriller or a clean mystery payoff, this will likely feel like a chore. That said, there are a few moody, atmospheric moments and committed performances—especially if you’re here for Ana de Armas—but you’ll need patience and a high tolerance for messiness to get through it.
