The Tale (2018)

The Tale is special because it turns the act of remembering into a gripping mystery, showing how the mind can edit a painful past into something survivable—and then, bravely, undo that edit. Jennifer Fox directs with a documentarian’s precision and a dramatist’s nerve, using a shifting structure that feels like truth coming into focus rather than a story being “revealed.” Laura Dern is extraordinary as a woman both intelligent and emotionally cornered, while Isabelle Nélisse and Elizabeth Debicki bring an unsettling, lived-in intimacy to the memories that won’t stay put. This is a heavy, often harrowing film, but it’s also clear-eyed and deeply humane, and if you can handle its subject matter, it’s the kind of drama that doesn’t just move you—it changes the way you think about what “knowing” your own story really means.

The Tale is trying to do something brave and necessary: show how memory can protect you, and how grooming can be reframed as “romance” until the truth becomes unavoidable. It’s smart and unsettling rather than twisty-fun, and if you’re expecting a conventional mystery with clean reveals, this will feel more like an emotional autopsy that keeps tightening the vise. The subject matter is heavy and explicit in implication—sexual abuse, manipulation, and the slow recontextualizing of consent—so if those themes are triggering or you want escapism, skip it. The redeeming side is that Laura Dern is excellent, the filmmaking is controlled and clear-eyed, and it’s genuinely impactful, but it’s the kind of impact that can leave you drained rather than entertained.
