Hurricane Bianca (2016)

Hurricane Bianca is the kind of scrappy, crowd-pleasing comedy that lives or dies on personality—and Bianca Del Rio has enough of it to light up the whole screen. It takes a genuinely ugly spark of small-town prejudice and flips it into a catty, high-heeled revenge fantasy, where the jokes are sharp, the targets are ripe, and the drag isn’t just a disguise but a full-blown comic weapon. The film’s modest budget becomes part of its charm, with surprisingly fun costume and production design and a supporting cast (including a perfectly game Rachel Dratch) who know exactly how to set Bianca up for the kill. If you want subtlety or a polished studio sheen, this may not be your ride, but if you’re on the fence and enjoy broad, biting humor with a little righteous sting, it’s an easy, entertaining watch.

Hurricane Bianca clearly wants to be a crowd-pleasing revenge comedy with a big drag persona at the center, taking a real issue (small-town homophobia) and flipping it into cathartic payback. The problem is it often feels like a thin sketch stretched to feature length: the plot meanders, the pacing drags, and the dialogue doesn’t consistently give Bianca Del Rio the sharp, lethal material you’re expecting. Some performances land as broad and a bit stiff, and the jokes can feel more obvious than outrageous, which dulls the bite of the premise. If you’re here mainly for Bianca’s presence and a lightweight, mean-girls-in-Texas fantasy, you may have fun; if you want a tight script, big comedic escalation, or a deeper drama, this probably won’t deliver.
