All Day and a Night (2020)

All Day and a Night is special because it refuses to treat a life sentence like a punchline or a plot twist—it treats it like a human being, full of history, bruises, and hard-earned clarity. Joe Robert Cole directs with a mournful, compassionate steadiness, letting the story move like memory does: jagged, intimate, and haunted by the question of what we inherit versus what we choose. Ashton Sanders gives a raw, searching performance as Jah, and when Jeffrey Wright enters the frame, their father-son dynamic lands with the kind of emotional weight you feel in your chest rather than simply understand. It’s not an easy watch—violence, addiction, and prison life are shown with blunt honesty—but if you’re on the fence and want a drama with empathy, urgency, and something real to say about cycles of harm, this one stays with you.

All Day and a Night is clearly trying to be a sober, human look at how cycles of violence, poverty, and family trauma funnel a young man toward prison, and it has the right cast to sell that weight. The problem is it often feels like a checklist of familiar crime-drama beats, with heavy voiceover and a flashback structure that keeps you watching the “message” from a distance instead of living the emotion. When it turns brutal, it’s not subtle, and the relentless violence, slurs, and drug use can feel punishing rather than illuminating if you’re not in the mood for something grim. If you can accept a well-acted but not especially fresh cautionary tale, Ashton Sanders and Jeffrey Wright give it enough sincerity to be worth a look, but don’t expect it to reinvent the genre.
