The Monster (2016)

The Monster is special because it treats its creature-feature premise like a pressure cooker for something more intimate: a raw, bruised story about a mother and daughter who can’t quite reach each other until the night turns truly unforgiving. Bryan Bertino wrings dread from rain-slick roads, dead phone signals, and the oppressive dark just beyond the headlights, building suspense with restraint so that every sound and shadow feels personal. Zoe Kazan brings a jagged, human vulnerability to the kind of character horror movies often flatten, and the film’s best scares land because you’re not just fearing what’s in the woods—you’re invested in who’s trapped beside you. It’s lean, nasty, and emotionally heavy, so if you want a fun, crowd-pleasing romp this isn’t it, but if you’re on the fence for a horror film that actually has something to say between the jolts, it’s absolutely worth the trip.

The Monster is clearly aiming for a stripped-down, emotional creature feature where the real horror is a broken mother-daughter relationship trapped in a dark forest. When it works, it’s thanks to strong, grounded performances (especially from Zoe Kazan and Ella Ballentine) and a tense, rainy-night atmosphere that keeps things claustrophobic. But if you’re coming for inventive scares or a clever monster-mystery, you may find it predictable, a bit slow in the middle, and more invested in heavy-handed metaphor than satisfying horror payoffs. Watch it if you’re open to a grim, intimate drama with horror trappings; skip it if you want sharp pacing, big set pieces, or a monster movie that fully commits to being fun.
