Okja (2017)

Okja is special because it dares to be a big-hearted adventure, a sharp-edged satire, and a gut-level tearjerker all at once—and somehow makes that balancing act feel effortless. Bong Joon-ho builds a vividly imagined world where wonder and unease live side by side, anchored by a fiercely sincere bond between Mija and the gentle giant she loves. The film’s sci-fi gloss and playful set pieces keep it propulsive, but what lingers is how thoughtfully it prods at the machinery of modern consumption without turning into a lecture. It won’t be for everyone—its tonal shifts can be bracing, and it doesn’t shy away from discomfort—but if you want something original that hits both the heart and the mind, this is a rare treat.

Okja is clearly aiming for a heartfelt, high-stakes fable about corporate cruelty and the bond between a girl and her extraordinary animal friend, mixing adventure with satire and sci-fi spectacle. The problem is the movie keeps yanking you between tender emotion, broad comedy, and blunt social commentary, and those tonal shifts can feel jarring rather than clever. If you’re allergic to heavy-handed messaging or performances that go big and cartoonish (Jake Gyllenhaal in particular), this may test your patience, and the plotting can feel uneven as it bounces from set piece to set piece. That said, the central relationship is genuinely sweet and the creature work is impressive, so if you don’t mind the messy mix and want something provocative and emotional, it can still land.
