Mustang (2015)
In a Turkish village, five orphaned sisters live under strict rule while members of their family prepare their arranged marriages.
What people think about Mustang
Mustang is one of those rare dramas that feels both urgent and alive, turning a story about confinement into something that pulses with youth, mischief, and defiance. Deniz Gamze Ergüven directs with a bright, wind-in-your-hair energy that makes the sunlit village beauty and the girls’ sisterly bond glow even as the walls close in, and the five young performances are so natural you stop thinking of them as “actors” and start rooting for them like friends. The film moves with the tension of a thriller at times, carried by a stirring score, but its real power is how it finds grace and humor in small rebellions without sanding down the harsh realities it’s confronting. It is, however, a tough watch in places—its themes include forced marriage and abuse—so if you’re not up for heavy material, save it for when you are, because it’s absolutely worth meeting on its own terms.
Mustang is clearly trying to be a fierce, crowd-pleasing cry for freedom, following five sisters as their world shrinks under family control and the pressure of arranged marriage. At its best, it has real momentum and an urgent, youthful energy, with the girls’ bond and small acts of rebellion carrying you through some genuinely tense stretches. But it can also feel a bit packaged: the voiceover sometimes spells out what the images already say, and the sisters aren’t always distinct enough to make every turn hit as hard as it wants to. If you’re sensitive to heavy themes like sexual abuse, coercion, and suicide—or if you bristle at films that may simplify a culture to make a point—this one might frustrate or upset you even if you agree with its message.
