Prophecy (2015)
The cyber crime investigation division at the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department finds a video on website "YOURTUBE." In the video, a man covered by a newspaper, warns that a fire will be set at a food processing company. More crime notices are soon found involving violent crimes. Geitsu is the main guy behind the group "Shinbunshi," which has posted the videos. He used to work as a temporary employee at an IT company, but was unfairly dismissed. He then begins doing manual labor work and meets the other members of "Shinbushi."
What people think about Prophecy
Prophecy feels special because it turns the familiar cat-and-mouse thriller into something sharper: a mystery that pulses with the uneasy electricity of online life, where a single uploaded video can tilt a whole city into panic. The film’s hook is irresistible—anonymous warnings, escalating crimes, and a police unit racing to decode the people behind the screens—yet it never forgets the human cost beneath the headlines. Strong performances give weight to what could’ve been just a clever premise, and the storytelling keeps tightening the net while quietly asking uncomfortable questions about work, justice, and who gets heard. If you like thrillers that are as thought-provoking as they are tense, this hidden gem is easy to recommend; if you prefer your mysteries simple and purely escapist, its darker social bite may feel a little too real.
Prophecy is clearly aiming for a slick, socially charged cyber-thriller about vigilante justice and corporate cruelty, with the “newspaper mask” gimmick giving it a distinctive hook. The problem is it often feels longer than its story can support, piling on twists and moving parts that can make the plot more tiring than intriguing. If you’re coming for tight pacing and escalating tension, you may find it oddly low on thrills and a bit lopsided in what it chooses to emphasize. That said, if you enjoy Japanese crime dramas with a moral angle and don’t mind a talkier, messier ride, there’s enough atmosphere and ideas to keep you mildly engaged.
