The Similars (2015)

The Similars feels like a lost Twilight Zone episode beamed in from an alternate channel—slickly retro, eerily funny in its deadpan moments, and steadily tightening the screws until you realize you’ve been holding your breath. Confined to a rain-soaked bus station and a handful of uneasy strangers, it turns a simple setup into a smart, imaginative pressure cooker where the rules of reality start to bend in unnerving ways. It’s stylish genre filmmaking with a real storyteller’s confidence, more interested in dread and ideas than cheap shocks, and that’s exactly why it lingers. If you prefer your horror grounded and your sci-fi explained to the last detail, it may feel too strange, but if you like your chills served with mystery and flair, it’s a terrific ride.

The Similars is clearly aiming for a Twilight Zone-style, retro sci-fi horror vibe: a small group trapped in one location while reality starts bending in unnerving ways. When it clicks, the atmosphere, production design, and creeping oddness are genuinely fun, like a love letter to classic genre TV. But be warned: the central gimmick is the whole meal, and if you don’t buy into it early, the story can start to feel repetitive, a bit predictable, and occasionally unintentionally silly. If you want character-driven horror with sharp dialogue and escalating logic, this may test your patience; if you’re happy with a stylish, familiar concept executed with more mood than depth, you’ll probably have a decent time.
