Welcome to the Circle (2020)

Welcome to the Circle is the kind of horror that gets under your skin not by piling on jump scares, but by quietly rearranging your sense of reality until you’re as unsteady as the characters. Director David H. Fowler builds a thick, uncanny atmosphere where cult psychology feels less like exposition and more like a trap—shifting perspectives, irrational spaces, and circular, koan-like arguments that blur who’s in control and who’s already lost. The performances, especially Taylor Dianne Robinson and Matthew MacCaull, ground the nightmare with a bruised, human urgency that makes the dread stick. If you prefer clean rules and straightforward scares, this one may feel strange and disorienting—but if you like horror that seduces you into confusion and then tightens the net, it’s a beguiling trip worth taking.

Welcome to the Circle is clearly aiming for a backwoods cult nightmare with a ticking-clock rescue plot and a dash of supernatural menace, and on paper that’s a perfectly serviceable setup for low-budget horror. The problem is the execution: the dialogue leans hard on repetitive mystical talk, the writing doesn’t give the characters much depth beyond being loud or irritating, and the performances often tip into hammy rather than scary. It also spins its wheels, revisiting the same beats instead of building dread, so the tension fizzles when it should be tightening. If you enjoy scrappy indie horror and can forgive rough acting for the sake of a culty premise, you might get some mileage out of it—but if you need sharp writing, believable characters, and escalating suspense, this will likely test your patience.
