Fair warning: the subject matter is harrowing and the intensity doesn’t let up, but if you can handle a grim, expertly made survival thriller, this one sticks with you because it’s so sharply observed.

Hounds of Love is trying to be a tense, psychologically minded survival thriller about power, control, and the sick chemistry between two predators, with a smart heroine looking for the one crack she can exploit. It succeeds at dread and claustrophobia, and the performances (especially from the captors) are unsettlingly convincing, but it’s also relentlessly punishing in a way that can feel more exploitative than illuminating. The violence and sexual threat hang over nearly every scene, with a grim, sleazy tone that doesn’t offer much relief or catharsis, so if you’re sensitive to captivity, implied assault, or torture-adjacent cruelty, this will likely feel like suffering-as-entertainment.
