The Bronze (2016)
In 2004, Hope Ann Greggory became an American hero after winning the bronze medal for the women's gymnastics team. Today, she's still living in her small hometown, washed-up and embittered. Stuck in the past, Hope must reassess her life when a promising young gymnast threatens her local celebrity status.
What people think about The Bronze
The Bronze is special because it dares to center a comedy on a heroine who’s not trying to be likable—she’s messy, mean, and weirdly magnetic, and the movie finds real humanity in that wreckage. It has the bite of a small-town satire and the scrappy energy of an underdog sports story, but with a darker, sharper edge that keeps it surprising instead of sentimental. Melissa Rauch’s anti-hero performance commits so hard it becomes the film’s secret weapon, turning crude laughs and cringe into something oddly redeeming by the time the credits roll. If you prefer your comedies warm and cuddly, this may be too abrasive, but if you enjoy misunderstood gems that take big swings and actually land a few, it’s a funny, bracing watch.
The Bronze is clearly aiming for a dark, abrasive comedy about a former sports hero who can’t let go, using small-town worship and petty rivalry to expose how toxic nostalgia can get. The problem is it leans so hard into Hope’s selfish, mean-spirited behavior that the joke can start to feel like “watch an awful person be awful,” which many viewers find more grating than funny. If you need a likable lead or a warm underdog arc, this will probably feel unpleasant and oddly joyless. That said, if you can tolerate a deliberately nasty protagonist, there are flashes of sharpness and committed performances that hint at the better movie it wants to be.
