Dope (2015)

Dope is special because it turns a familiar coming-of-age setup into a fast, funny, razor-smart ride that never forgets the stakes of where its hero lives. Rick Famuyiwa threads buoyant ‘90s-hip-hop nostalgia through a present-tense Los Angeles pressure cooker, and Shameik Moore makes Malcolm both sharply witty and achingly human as he tries to stay “good” in a world that keeps handing him impossible choices. The movie’s vibe is equal parts hangout comedy and breathless caper, with social observation baked in so naturally you’re laughing one minute and quietly wincing the next. It’s not for everyone—there’s heavy language, drugs, and some violence—but if you want something crowd-pleasing that’s also genuinely insightful about identity and ambition, this one earns its title.

Dope is trying to mash up a coming-of-age story with a crime caper and a sharp little commentary on how “the hood” and “the nerd” labels trap people, and when it’s clicking it has real energy and a likable lead in Shameik Moore. The problem is it can feel tonally uneven: it starts with a fresh voice and then drifts into a more familiar, plotty “one crazy night turns into a scheme” comedy structure that isn’t always as funny or as pointed as it wants to be. If you’re expecting consistent laugh-out-loud comedy or deep, coherent social satire, you may find it a bit scattered, even if the premise is great. Also, it’s very explicit—heavy slurs, drugs, sex, and gun violence—so if that’s not your vibe, this will be more exhausting than entertaining.
