The Overnight (2015)

The Overnight is special because it takes a premise that could’ve been cheap or mean-spirited and turns it into a sly, surprisingly warm comedy of manners—one that keeps you laughing even as it keeps you guessing. Patrick Brice directs with a light touch, letting awkward silences and tiny social tells build into big, unpredictable turns, while Adam Scott, Taylor Schilling, and a delightfully unfiltered Jason Schwartzman play it all with total commitment and human vulnerability. The vibe is intimate, mischievous, and slightly surreal, like a friendly hangout that keeps drifting into “wait, did that really just happen?” territory without ever losing its emotional footing. It’s not for everyone—this is very R-rated and unabashedly explicit—but if you can handle the frank sexuality, you’ll find a witty, playful little gem that’s far more sincere than its outrageous setup suggests.

The Overnight is aiming for an awkward, escalating “what did we just walk into?” comedy about adult insecurity, marriage, and blurred boundaries, and it does get some mileage out of that discomfort. But it’s also a pretty slight movie: the big ideas about intimacy and identity mostly stay at the level of edgy banter and shock beats, and it can feel like it ends just as it’s finally ready to say something. If you’re not up for very explicit sexuality and nudity played for uneasy laughs, or you want a mystery-comedy with real twists and payoff, this will likely feel insubstantial. Still, the cast commits and the tone is confidently cringe, so if you enjoy compact, provocative indie comedies that are more vibe than depth, it may scratch the itch.
