31 is Rob Zombie in pure grindhouse mode: a nasty, neon-smeared Halloween fever dream that throws you into the dirt with its characters and never lets you catch your breath. It’s less about mystery than momentum—an ugly, high-energy survival sprint powered by oppressive atmosphere, industrial-strength gore, and the kind of sweaty, lived-in carnival texture Zombie does better than almost anyone. The real hook is the performances, especially the film’s scene-stealing villainy and hypnotic monologues, which give the chaos a perverse theatrical kick instead of feeling like violence for violence’s sake. This one isn’t for the squeamish or anyone allergic to mean-spirited exploitation, but if you want a brutal, loud, unapologetic horror ride that commits to its own warped vibe, it’s hard to look away.

31 is clearly trying to be a grimy, high-energy Rob Zombie carnival nightmare: loud, mean, and drenched in sleaze, with a simple “survive the night” hook and killer-clown spectacle. The problem is that it often feels like a thin concept stretched into a feature, with repetitive chase-and-kill loops, predictable beats, and characters who are more abrasive than engaging, which makes it hard to care who lives or dies. If you’re coming for sharp suspense, clever plotting, or horror that builds dread instead of just volume, this will likely feel monotonous and self-satisfied. That said, Richard Brake’s Doom-Head brings real menace, and the grimy production design has a nasty, committed vibe—so if you like Zombie’s aesthetic and can tolerate relentless cruelty over story, you may still get what you came for.
