Love Sonia (2018)

Love Sonia is the kind of drama that doesn’t just “raise awareness” so much as grab you by the collar and refuse to let you look away, powered by a raw, fearless performance from Mrunal Thakur that makes Sonia feel heartbreakingly real. Tabrez Noorani directs with an urgent, almost documentary credibility—never glamorizing the nightmare, but finding flashes of human connection and stubborn will to survive in the darkest places. It’s a tough, unvarnished watch with harrowing situations and intense content, yet its impact comes from how fiercely it insists on the dignity of its characters rather than reducing them to symbols. If you’re on the fence because you fear it’ll be misery for misery’s sake, it isn’t; it’s painful, yes, but it’s also purposeful, compassionate, and ultimately hard to forget.

Love Sonia is clearly trying to be an urgent, unflinching spotlight on sex trafficking and the systems that enable it, and it does have committed performances and a sense of righteous anger. But the film is relentlessly grim, and at times the way it stages trauma can feel packaged for impact rather than purely observed, which may leave you feeling more battered than enlightened. It also leans into an educational, heavy-handed mode that can make the drama feel like a message delivery system instead of a fully lived story. If you’re sensitive to repeated sexual violence, exploitation, and a generally deadening tone with little emotional breathing room, this is one to skip—even if you appreciate what it’s aiming to expose.
