Dead Rising: Watchtower (2015)

Dead Rising: Watchtower is the rare video-game adaptation that doesn’t apologize for its origins—it embraces the franchise’s scrappy, anything-can-be-a-weapon spirit while still delivering a lean, propulsive zombie thriller that plays just as well for newcomers. Director Zach Lipovsky keeps the pace brisk and the set pieces satisfyingly inventive, using the quarantined-town backdrop to mix action, panic, and darkly comic desperation without turning it into a wink-wink parody. Jesse Metcalfe makes a solid everyman anchor, Meghan Ory brings grit and urgency, and Rob Riggle’s presence adds a jolt of personality that helps the movie feel alive even when the streets aren’t. Fair warning: the violence and gore are not shy, so if you like your horror mild this won’t be your comfort watch—but if you want an energetic, surprisingly competent zombie ride with real affection for the source, it’s an easy yes.

Dead Rising: Watchtower is clearly trying to translate the game’s chaotic, weaponized zombie mayhem into a contained outbreak thriller with a bit of media satire and government cover-up intrigue. The problem is it often plays like a functional TV-movie: the pacing lurches, the characters are more serviceable than compelling, and it rarely finds the wit or bite that makes zombie stories feel alive instead of routine. The gore is very much the point (including some genuinely nasty imagery), so if you’re squeamish or just tired of zombies eating people in increasingly grim ways, this will feel like a slog. If you’re a Dead Rising fan who wants familiar lore and straightforward action, you’ll get some decent moments, but if you’re looking for sharp writing, memorable performances, or a fresh take on the genre, you can do better.
