Cop Car (2015)
Two kids find themselves in the centre of a deadly game of cat and mouse after taking a sheriff's cruiser for a joy ride.
What people think about Cop Car
Cop Car takes a deliciously simple setup—a stolen sheriff’s cruiser—and tightens it into a lean, nerve-racking thriller that never wastes a minute. Jon Watts directs with the confidence of someone who knows exactly how to stretch a quiet stretch of road into a pressure cooker, letting dread seep in as the boys’ “game” collides with something far uglier. Kevin Bacon is terrific as the sheriff, bringing a cold, restless menace that keeps the movie humming even when it’s just engines idling and radios crackling. It’s nasty in places and definitely earns its R rating, so it’s not for viewers who want their crime stories cozy—but if you’re on the fence and crave efficient, high-tension filmmaking, this one grabs hold and doesn’t let go.
Cop Car is aiming for a lean, nasty little cat-and-mouse thriller where a childish joyride collides with adult corruption, and for a while it absolutely works thanks to its stripped-down tension and Kevin Bacon’s cold, controlled menace. The problem is the script feels thinner than the premise deserves, so once the initial hook is set, the movie can start to spin its wheels and the build doesn’t always land with the punch you’re waiting for. It’s also an R-rated ride with sharp language and bursts of violence involving kids around weapons, which can feel more grim than fun if you’re not in the mood for that kind of stress. If you like small-scale thrillers that prioritize mood and escalation over deep character work or a killer payoff, you’ll get something out of it; if you want a more inventive plot or a truly satisfying finish, this may leave you underwhelmed.
