Malignant (2021)
Madison is paralyzed by shocking visions of grisly murders, and her torment worsens as she discovers that these waking dreams are in fact terrifying realities with a mysterious tie to her past.
What people think about Malignant
Malignant is special because it refuses to be polite horror: James Wan takes a pulpy, high-concept premise and films it with the slick confidence of a master showman, turning every hallway, shadow, and sudden silence into a dare. It starts as a tense, rain-soaked mystery—visions, unanswered questions, a heroine who can’t trust her own senses—then keeps tightening the screws with propulsive energy and some deliciously bold choices. The craftsmanship is unmistakable in the camera moves and sound design, but what people really respond to is its audacity: it’s the kind of studio horror that swings hard and doesn’t apologize when it gets strange. Be warned, it’s gnarly and knowingly over-the-top at times, so if you want restrained, “elevated” dread this may not be your flavor—but if you miss horror that feels like an event, Malignant delivers.
Malignant is clearly James Wan trying to mash up giallo-style mystery, supernatural horror, and a knowingly pulpy B-movie twist into one big, glossy package. The problem is the tone wobbles hard: it wants you to be terrified and to enjoy the absurdity, but it doesn’t always signal which one you’re supposed to feel, so the dialogue and some performances can land awkwardly instead of scary. If you’re looking for consistent dread, tight pacing, and clean logic, this may feel more like a loud, messy roller coaster with stretches that aren’t genuinely frightening. If you can tolerate (or even enjoy) extreme violence, high style, and a “go big or go home” swing that’s more bizarre than subtle, there’s still fun to be had.
